What Are Neuromodulators?
Botulinum toxin injections, known as neuromodulators, treat fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily stopping the muscles that create them. A neuromodulator is often injected into the muscle beneath the skin to cause the muscle to relax, improving the skin’s appearance.

Botox is an extremely popular injectable treatment that reduces or eliminates facial wrinkles and lines. Although the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet are the most common treatment areas, this injectable can also be used off-label to treat other facial regions.
Like Botox, Xeomin is FDA-approved for use on frown lines, but its off-label use allows it to be effective on forehead, jaw, and neck bands.
Jeuveau can smooth out moderate to severe crow’s feet and other facial creases as well.
What to Expect From Neuromodulator Injections
The average Botox session only takes about 10-20 minutes, although it can depend on the size of the area you’re having done. Results vary by patient and treated area but often begin to show 3-7 days following treatment and reach their peak after 2 weeks.
The effects of Botox typically last three to four months.
Redness and mild swelling are common side effects of Botox, Xeomin, and Jeuveau therapy, but they subside pretty quickly.
For Xeomin, the results usually show up within 3-4 days after treatment and can last up to four months. After that, you’ll need maintenance treatments to keep up the results.
For Jeuveau, you begin to notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles 2-3 days after treatment but the full effects typically take 7-10 days. The results of Jeuveau tend to last about 3-4 months and then maintenance treatment can happen after that.
Additionally, Botox and Jeuveau both contain complex proteins that can produce antibodies that make the formulations less effective. Due to this, you may need more treatments to get the effect you’re looking for. Xeomin does not have this issue.
Who is A Good Candidate For Neuromodulators?
Almost everyone is a good candidate for Botox, Jeuveau, and Xeomin. As long as you’re not pregnant, nursing, and have no infections, you should be just fine.
You also have to be 18 or over and have no neuromuscular disorders or history of excessive bleeding. But beyond that, if you’re struggling with the signs of aging and looking for treatment options, these three neuromodulators are likely great choices.
Follow Post-Neuromodulator Instructions
After injections, you’ll want to be sure you follow your doctor’s instructions as best you can.
For Botox, you’ll want to avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours after injections, laying down for at least six hours, and massaging the treated area. You’ll also want to avoid any strenuous activities or exercise.
For Xeomin, you’ll want to avoid laying down for at least four hours after the injections. Additionally, don’t rub the treated area and stay away from performing any exercise or strenuous physical activity. But, in the first 1-2 hours, you will want to use the treated muscles. It helps works the solution into the muscles.
With Jeuveau, you want to avoid alcohol and intense physical activity for 24-48 hours. And like the other neuromodulators, you’ll want to avoid rubbing the treated area for least 24 hours and avoid laying down for at least 4 hours.
